SENBO Metal Roofing Decorative Panels are designed for architectural roofing and building envelope projects, combining visual appeal with weather protection. Available in aluminum-magnesium-manganese, aluminum, honeycomb and color-coated steel options, they support standing-seam and other installation systems. Suitable for architects, contractors and buyers seeking durable, customizable decorative roofing panels.
Metal roofing decorative panels form the outer visual layer of a metal roof system, installed separately from the waterproofing layer. The waterproofing is handled by the structural roof panel beneath, while the decorative panel expresses the architectural form and provides secondary benefits such as shading, acoustic improvement, and protection for the waterproofing membrane. SENBO supplies these panels with material certificates and dimensional inspection records, and the project team provides technical support for panel layout and installation sequencing.
Material Choices
The selection of decorative panel material depends on the required form, weight, and weather resistance. The following options are commonly used:
Aluminium alloy single-skin panels: Usually 2.0 mm to 3.0 mm thick with a PVDF finish. They offer a wide colour range, good formability for complex shapes, and low weight.
Al-Mg-Mn alloy profiled sheets: Grades AA3004 or AA3003, with tensile strength of 240 MPa to 285 MPa and density of 2.73 g/cm³, about one third that of steel. Designed for more than 50 years of service and suitable for curved roofs.
Aluminium honeycomb composite panels: Face sheets of 0.8 mm to 1.0 mm aluminium bonded to an aluminium honeycomb core. The core cell side length is no more than 9.53 mm and wall thickness at least 0.07 mm. These panels give better flatness and stiffness than solid sheet of the same weight.
Color-coated steel panels: Use a high-performance Al-Zn coating with a PVDF topcoat. Appropriate for decorative roofing on large public buildings where a steel substrate is preferred.
Surface Treatment
For architectural aluminium panels, a PVDF fluorocarbon coating is recommended. The resin content should be at least 70%, and the coating thickness must meet YS/T 429.2. PVDF provides strong resistance to ultraviolet light and maintains colour stability for more than 20 years with minimal fading or chalking.
System Build-up
The decorative layer is typically installed above the waterproofing to create a dual-layer metal roof. In the entrance hall roof of the New China International Exhibition Center Phase II, the assembly from bottom to top was: a 0.8 mm Al-Zn profiled sheet with standing seams as the waterproof layer, a waterproof membrane, thermal insulation, a decorative framing system, and the decorative panel surface. This separation keeps the waterproofing independent from the aesthetic layer.

Project Application Data
Airport Terminal Roof
A major international airport's Terminal 5 expansion used 267,000 m² of metal roofing across the main terminal, concourses, and boarding bridges. The decorative panels were 0.8 mm thick high-strength profiled steel sheets with a high-content Al-Zn coating providing four to six times the corrosion resistance of standard galvanized steel. The PVDF surface remained stable between -40°C and 150°C, offering long-term UV protection. The project received the Gold Award for Metal Enclosure System Engineering at the 2024 Architectural Waterproofing Industry Science and Technology Awards.
Exhibition Centre Decorative Aluminium System
Phase II of the New China International Exhibition Center in Beijing covers about 280,000 m² of metal roofing. The registration hall roof used 3 mm thick aluminium panels with PVDF coating as the decorative layer, supported by aluminium alloy square tube framing. Beneath the decorative layer, the roof included a 0.8 mm Al-Zn profiled steel waterproof layer with standing seams, two layers of rock wool insulation totalling 140 mm at 160 kg/m³ density, a TPO membrane, and a perforated profiled steel sound-absorbing layer. The decorative panels were installed independently from the waterproofing, achieving the desired visual effect without compromising watertightness.
Complex Geometry Roof at an Exhibition Centre
The Xuzhou Huaihai International Expo Center used a decorative panel system with stepped elevations and intersecting levels. The upper cornice used 3 mm thick aluminium veneer, and the lower cornice used 4 mm thick aluminium composite panels. The project team used Rhino and Grasshopper for parametric modelling to analyse curvature and optimise panels with four non-coplanar vertices into flat forms. The decorative roof was assembled with modular installation, and the complete building envelope passed engineering validation for durability, waterproofing, thermal performance, and structural integrity.
Double-curved Honeycomb Panel Roof
The main venue of the Zhongguancun Forum permanent site used an irregular double-curved aluminium honeycomb panel system for 6,000 m² of roof area. More than 1,000 unique panel specifications were arranged in layered configurations. The support structure used a fan-shaped radiating framework with multi-directional adjustable brackets allowing ±15° in-plane rotation and angular adjustment between 75° and 105°. Two to three honeycomb panels were assembled onto a single framework unit in the factory, then installed on site as complete modules. This prefabricated approach reduced the construction schedule by nearly one third compared with traditional methods.
Design Features
Form flexibility: Panels can be flat, curved, tapered, or double-curved. Parametric modelling helps convert complex geometry into buildable panels.
Long-term colour stability: PVDF coatings resist UV fading and chalking, maintaining appearance for over 20 years.
Light weight: Aluminium and honeycomb panels reduce structural load compared with solid steel or concrete cladding.
Independent waterproofing: The decorative layer does not penetrate the waterproofing, which lowers the risk of leaks at fastener points.
Efficient installation: Unitized honeycomb panel assemblies reduce on-site work and improve alignment on complex surfaces.
Typical Applications
Decorative roof layers for airport terminals and high-speed railway stations.
Large-span public buildings such as exhibition centres, stadiums, and theatres.
Landmark buildings with unique or irregular roof forms.
Commercial complexes, high-end hotels, and villas requiring a distinctive roof appearance.
Installation Notes
Verify the supporting framework alignment before placing decorative panels.
Use lifting equipment with soft slings to avoid scratching the finished surface.
Follow the manufacturer's sequence for hook-on or unitized systems to ensure correct engagement.
For curved panels, check the panel orientation and support bracket adjustment before final fixing.
Seal joints and edges according to the architectural details, especially where panels meet flashings or penetrations.
FAQ
What is the difference between decorative panels and the waterproofing layer?
The waterproofing layer is a continuous metal sheet or membrane that prevents water entry. The decorative panel sits above it and does not need to be watertight. This separation means the decorative layer can be perforated, curved, or panelised without affecting the roof's weather resistance.
Which panel type is best for a curved roof?
Al-Mg-Mn alloy profiled sheets can be roll-formed into curved shapes and are often used for smooth, single-curvature roofs. For double-curved or free-form surfaces, aluminium honeycomb panels are more suitable because they can be fabricated into complex, non-planar shapes while maintaining flatness.
How is colour consistency maintained across a large roof?
All panels for the same surface should come from the same coil batch when possible. If multiple batches are unavoidable, the colour difference should be controlled to a specified ΔE value. PVDF coatings from the same paint system tend to have consistent colour and gloss.
Can decorative panels be used on renovation projects?
Yes, decorative metal panels can be added over an existing roof to change the appearance or improve thermal performance, provided the existing structure can support the additional weight. A structural assessment is required before proceeding.
Quality Control and Documentation
Suppliers should provide material certificates for the aluminium alloy or steel substrate, coating thickness reports, and dimensional inspection records. For complex geometries, fabrication drawings and panel schedules should be reviewed before production. On-site receiving checks should confirm panel dimensions, surface finish, and freedom from transport damage.
Selection Considerations
Confirm the architectural geometry and panel size limits with the fabricator early in the design phase.
Select the coating type based on the building's UV exposure and desired service life.
For coastal or industrial sites, verify that the metallic coating and paint system are suitable for the corrosion category.
Plan the support framing and bracket adjustment range to accommodate panel tolerances and thermal movement.
Consider the maintenance access path for inspection and cleaning of the decorative surface.
